1963Cert. 12 Length: 112 mins. Available on: Warner/Terrorvision, S084605 Price: £6.99 Director: Robert Wise Starring: Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, Richard Johnson With: Russ Tamblyn, Lois Maxwell Plot: A team of paranormal investigators spend a night in a severely haunted house. Comments: ![]() Thought by many to be the best haunted house film ever made,
it is sadly becoming quite dated. The problems are not with
the effects or the style of the film, i.e. having great sound
effects but never seeing the ghost, as this adds a
considerable amount of suspense. Similarly, the black and
white film used also adds rather than detracts from the
dark and uneasy atmosphere. No, the problem with this film is
the lack of characters to empathise with. The frightened
spinster, playboy, "hinted at" lesbian, and know-all professor
are four of the most dated and alienating American stereotypes
to ever appear on the silver screen and for the most part are
simply embarrassing. The 1999 remake is best avoided in favour of this original movie though as, unless you really like Catherine Zeta Jones, the overkill from all the computer generated effects can severely damage your boredom tolerance. Dr Blood's rating: 7/10 |
