Cert. 18 Length: 91 mins. Available on: Universal, 0534533 Price: £9.99 Director: James Whale Starring: Boris Karloff, Colin Clive With: Mae Clarke, John Boles, Dwight Frye, Edward Van Sloan, Frederick Kerr, Lionel Belmore, Michael Mark, Marilyn Harris, Arletta Duncan, Pauline Moore, Francis Ford Plot: Karloff plays Dr Frankenstein's monster in this early, very loose version of Mary Shelley's 1818 novel. Comments: The 1931 black and white Universal monsters movie is still the best version of Mary Shelley's classic novel. Boris Karloff creates great pathos even with all the heavy and uncomfortable makeup. Trivia fans might be interested to know that the makeup for Frankenstein's monster took 13 painful hours and was so heavy that Boris Karloff suffered years of neck pain as a result...mind you he wouldn't have done if he had remembered to take the bolt out...hehehe. (Before you email me, as we all know, the bolt through the monster's neck is really supposed to be electrodes.)Dr Blood's rating: 8/10 |
