Cert. 18 Length: 90 mins. Available on: Criterion Collection Price: £17.99 Director: Georges Franju Starring: Pierre Brasseur, Alida Valli, Juliette Mayniel, Edith Scob Plot: A brilliant surgeon, Professor Genessier, helped by his assistant Louise, kidnaps nice young girls. He removes their faces and tries to graft them onto the head on his beloved daughter Christiane, who has been entirely spoiled in a car crash. All the experiments fail, and the victims die, but Genessier keeps trying... Comments:
This is an old 1960 black and white horror/suspense French movie that, among other things, inspired a hit record by Billy Idol. This doctor and his assistant kidnap young girls and take their facial skin off to graft onto his daughter's face after she had a horrible car accident that left her disfigured. The car accident was caused by her father (the doctor) who feels guilty and will try anything to heal his daughters wounds. This movie is quite graphic for the time - especially the part where the doctor is removing the skin of one of the victims - it made me cringe!!! The only place where I this movie misses the point is with the police. The police guys set up an "innocent" girl (who had been caught shoplifting many times!), to go in the doctors hospital to see if she would end up disappearing. She does and the police do nothing!!! So for this flaw I gave this movie a 4 out of 5 stars!! The rest of it is pretty creepy and, yeah, I like old black and white movies. If they had done an American remake of this movie in the 60s, you could see Vincent Price playing the part of the doctor... he would have been terrific!!! Hellgirl's rating: 4/5 |
