Cert. 18 Length: 105 mins. Available on: Warner Brothers, D017242 Price: £6.99 Director: Renny Harlin Starring: Saffron Burrows, Thomas Jane, LL Cool J With: Michael Rapaport, Stellan Skarsgard, Samuel L. Jackson Plot: Researchers genetically alter the brains of captive sharks to develop a cure for Alzheimer's disease. Unfortunately, there are side effects - the sharks get smarter! When a storm wrecks their undersea laboratory, the sharks attack their captors as they try to escape back to the ocean. Comments: Although conceived as a rival to "Jaws", this turned out to be little more than an inferior reworking of all the action scenes from 'Alien Resurrection'. The same dodgy computer generated imaging was used though not nearly as well as in the superior Sci-Fi adventure. However, for all its cinematic limitations it does have at least a couple of exciting moments of gore which would have made this a much better offering if their style had been sustained throughout the rest of movie. I really wanted to like this movie more but when it appears that the script writers were suffering from the very disease that the scientists in the film were trying to cure, and the best performance in the film comes from a rap singer, it makes hard work for any reviewer to justify why anyone should want to rent this movie let alone buy it. Fans of LL Cool J will be very impressed by his role as he steals the show in every scene that he is in. Not even a talking parrot beats him to some great payoff lines! I have however given this movie a minimum entry level rating because of just two scenes... Rather than giving them away, I will let you decide if you think the same when you see it... If you count more than two good scenes you may have been sadly deluded by all the hype. The skinny model who gets all her clothes off to electrocute a shark is not one of them! Dr Blood's rating: 5/10 |
