Promo blurb: A harrowing action-thriller, the film begins as a fetus awakens in the womb of his young mother, his consciousness aroused by the torrent of vampire blood searing through her veins. Suffering from a plague inflicted by the virulent bite of a vampire, the woman's pain reaches her unborn son through their shared bloodstream. By the time the boy is delivered into the world, his mother's body is lifeless. Born with powers greater than any man or vampire, the child is to become the mythical avenger known as Blade (Wesley Snipes).
Orphaned and outcast as a boy, Blade lives in the streets until he is discovered by Abraham Whistler (Kris Kristofferson), a professional vampire hunter and an expert in the science of the un-dead. Under Whistler's guidance, Blade's powers are honed as he matures into a legendary soldier and almighty champion of mankind.
Blade's destiny is a paradox. He is sworn to defend humanity, yet he is not entirely human. A lost soul who does not fit into any world, it is Blade's blood-cursed heritage which empowers him to understand and conquer his enemy - an evil legion of vampires.
Together, Blade and Whistler engage in a bloody crusade to vanquish the vampires and their grip on the city. When Blade unearths a diabolical conspiracy to provoke a genocidal apocalypse known as "The Blood Tide," Blade and Whistler come face-to-fang with their most worthy adversary - Deacon Frost (STEPHEN DORFF).
Frost's quest for domination over the city's vampires is rivaled only by his unquenchable thirst for blood. In a power struggle to become overlord of the vampires, he slays the incumbent ruler and seizes control of the governing Assembly of Vampires. Now, as their vicious new leader, Frost prepares to destroy humankind by unleashing "The Blood Tide," but first he must battle Blade.
Comments:
Great special effects, awesome fight scenes, and make-up by artist Greg Cannom (Bram Stoker's Dracula) make this the "must see" vampire film of 1999. This is one of the best vampire action film I have ever seen, if not the best.
There are now 2 poorer sequels to this movie featuring far too many CGI effects, but if you really like Wesley Snipes then it is worth buying the trilogy on DVD for all the special features.
Dr Blood's rating: 9/10
