 When everybody believed that it was a true story, this was a terrifying film indeed. Now that it is known to be a hoax, the film is still pretty damned scary in its own right.James Brolin steals the show as he sinks into depression but Margot Kidder is little more than eyecandy. N.B. There is now also a shitty 2004 remake starring that Ryan Reynolds dude from Van Wilder (who wasn't too bad in "Blade III" to be honest) and Kimberley Davies who used to be quite special in the Australian soap "Neighbours" (which nobody watches anymore). It is absolutely dire and should be avoided at all costs. The only things it has in common with the story are the names of the characters and the title.
