Scream 4 (2011)

(AKA "Scre4m")

"Ten years have passed, and Sidney Prescott, who has put herself back together thanks in part to her writing, is visited by the Ghostface Killer."

Even though I know that everybody else has been raving about going to see "Scream 4" for weeks, it doesn't really interest me so, at this present time, I'm just going to post links to other people's blogs who I know have done a great job of reviewing it already. As I see the reviews appear on my blogroll, I'm going to list them here.

This may seem like a bit of a cop out considering that I'm usually right up there with the other "zero day review" people but I just can't motivate myself enough to go and see the fourth instalment of a franchise that, in my opinion, really should have died with "Scream 3" (2000).

I didn't like "Scream 3" and I've never really been all that enamoured by Wes Craven as a director. Yes, I liked "The Hills Have Eyes" (1977) and "Deadly Friend" (1986) but I've never been a big Freddy Krueger fan and the "Scream" series was more a miss than a hit to me as well.

I have no idea how a one-time "trendy teen horror" is supposed to work again with the main characters being far from trendy teenagers now but, maybe one day, I'll watch "Scream 4" on DVD and find out.

If you've seen "Scream 4" and have a review that you think I should add to my list, please feel free to post it as a comment below.

  1. Kida tired of the old slasher movies...

  2. I already know who one of the killers is just from the trailer. It's pretty obvious.

  3. Agreed! The first one was great because it satirized all those horror movies we grew up loving as kids. I hated Scream 2 and didn't even bother watching the third one. It should have been a stand-alone film. The fact that they are trying to "update" the rules within the film just come across as lame and is nothing but a "been there, done that" feel. The trailer isn't even very good at all!

  4. At the time, I really hated "Scream". I still think that it's only really worth watching for the first ten minutes and I couldn't warm to Neve Campbell at all. A lot of it is to do with how she was promoted as the "Emperor's New Clothes". I've seen her in "Wild Things" too which was a much better role for her.

When "Scream" came out a lot of websites (including my own) were carrying "Against Trendy Teen Horror" banners. Horror movies had pretty much dried up and this was all we got, followed by the "I Know What You Did" franchise. I think the same thing is going to happen again. :(

  5. I've not seen it, and I doubt I'm going to be able to pull off enough motivation to see it in the theater. DVD will probably be the only way and even then, I'm skeptical.

The whole premise of the Scream line of films was not only to be a satire on horror films, but to profile a serial killer who had a specific target. In each of the first 3 films, that killer is killed, only to pass the torch on to someone else. In the third, it's revealed that the killers from the first 2 movies are being manipulated by the real mastermind, Sidney's "brother", who is also killed off. That's pretty much the end of the storyline, where else can they take it? "Surprise Sidney! I'm your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate!"(Spaceballs nod)

In my opinion, it's just not wise to resurrect a series of films that had a specific premise, only to take it in a completely different direction, which this film appears to do. So, I'm not all that excited and I can wait for the DVD.

  6. I watched Scream 4 today and feel there was absolutely no need to make it. All the same bullshit being repeated once again. The characters from the first movie look so aged that it was no fun to watch them. The new characters were hardly noticeable to say the least. It was damn predictable also.

I guess they just dragged Scream way too much by making all those useless sequels. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless you are getting really bored and can't find any thing nice to watch.
